Dr David Ford’s Blog  -  Summer 2008

The Rena Aquarium (120cm Bow Front) kit included the Rena  xP1 power filter, which coped OK with the shoal  of  Neon Tetras originally installed.  Readers of this blog will recall that these Tropicals were transferred to a new aquarium.  The Rena tank was converted to a coldwater set-up and Fancy Goldfish added.  The xP1 kept the water clear but the Nitrates increased and an algal bloom soon  developed, so it was decided to upgrade the filter.  Rena have just launched a new filter in their xP range: the xP4 with 4 canisters holding chemical, biological and mechanical filter media.  The new unit replaced the original xP1 (these can be seen in the photo) and with a pumping rate over 1500 litres per hour the new filter brought the aquascene to life as the plants started waving in the flow.  Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH were all measured with an API Master Test Kit and found to give ideal results after a few weeks.
